Rhinos Don’t Eat Pancakes
Sara Ogilvie
Here is another hit from the creators of the hugely popular book, Dogs Don’t Do Ballet (shortlisted for both the Roald Dahl Funny Prize and the Booktrust Early Years Award). Reminiscent of David McKee’s Not Now, Bernard, Daisy can’t believe her parents won’t listen when she tells them they have a visitor: ‘a big rhino, as big as a bus and as purple as a plum’. Mum is multi-tasking, on the phone, fingers flying across her laptop. Dad’s also preoccupied and each response is always: ‘Shhh! Daisy. Can’t you see we’re BUSY.’ So Daisy befriends the Rhino. When the happy resolution comes, with her parents listening to Daisy ‘til she completely runs out of words’, it is handled with panache. As expected of Ogilvie, recently named one of Booktrust’s Top Ten Best New Illustrators, the pictures intrigue. There is strength of character in each family member and the rhino is endearing. And there’s a wonderful SURPRISE on the final page!
